If you hurt all over your body, and frequently feel exhausted, gone through numerous tests to find out what is wrong with you and even then, your doctor can’t find anything specifically wrong with you; your pain may very well be a result of Fibromyalgia.

If you experience tender points on places on places like your neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched you may have Fibromyalgia. If you have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called “fibro fog,” you may have Fibromyalgia.

Well, not that this is a comforting thought but you are not alone. Over ten million Americans suffer from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia pain.

This condition overall is characterized by chronic pain felt throughout your entire body, mainly in the muscles and ligaments. Pain is typically felt in your neck, back, shoulders, hands, and pelvic area; but anywhere in the body can be affected with pain.

Fibromyalgia sufferers also endure general fatigue and sleep disturbances. So, it is easy to understand why most sufferers seek Fibromyalgia pain treatments that work for them. Thankfully, various Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief exist.

If you are one of five to seven percent of the population who suffer from Fibromyalgia, the following Fibromyalgia pain treatment information may help you find and get pain relief.

Medications Used for Fibromyalgia Pain Treatments for Pain Relief.

Pain treatment is generally in the form of a pill. Many people agree that the best Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief come in pill form. There are many medications that are used as Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief, but it is necessary for you to visit your doctor to determine the extent of and devise a treatment plan for your specific condition with your doctor and receive a prescription, as over-the-counter drugs are not usually strong enough to alleviate the pain associated with Fibromyalgia.

Antidepressant’s (Paxil, Prozac), sleep medications (Lunesta, Ambien), anti-epileptics (Neurontin), and muscle relaxants (Flexeril) can all be used as Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief. Many of these medications relieve sufferer pain so you can sleep at night, therefore allowing for the deep-level sleep needed for tissue repair and other body functions specific to your condition and level of pain.

Additional Methods of Fibromyalgia Pain Treatments for Pain Relief.

There are also other methods of Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief. Sufferers may use these alternative methods along with medication, or by themselves. Alternative methods of Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief include:

ReNu MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution Linked To Fungal Keratitis Symptoms

Bausch & Lombs Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens cleaning solution has been linked to a rare type of fungal eye infection called Fusarium Keratitis.Although investigations have not revealed a single, definitive causal agent at this time, the obvious correlation between product use and the Fusarium Keratitis infection has led Bausch & Lomb, the FDA and the CDC to take immediate action.

On May 15, 2006 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement to the public alerting them to the fact that Bausch & Lomb had announced a global recall of its Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens cleaning solution.Just two days prior to this, on May 13, 2006, Bausch & Lomb suspended all United States sales of its MoistureLoc product. This was a direct response to the CDCs announcement that it was investigating a spike in infections in Americans using this solution.

However, it is the Far East that first experienced fungal outbreaks in correlation with the Bausch & Lomb product. In February of 2006, sales of Renu with MoistureLoc were stopped in these countries. Infections have also occurred recently in Europe.

Ongoing federal inspections of Bausch & Lombs South Carolina factory in Greenville have not resulted in any evidence of sub-standard practices or contamination to date. Bausch & Lombs Chief Executive, Ron Zarrella, stated that some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula may be increasing the relative risk of Fusarium infection in unusual circumstancesHe also advised customers to stop using the product and emphasized that “Bausch & Lomb’s top priority is the safety of our customers, and we want them to have complete confidence in our products.”

What is Fusarium Keratitis?
Fusarium Keratitis is a severe, rare, painful fungal infection of the eye that can lead to blindness. Fusarium, a fungus that is found in the environment and on our skin, is generally found in plant materials in tropical and subtropical areas. Usually, Fusarium enters the eye when there is a trauma or injury to the cornea. It may also occur in individuals with compromised immune systems. It is not transmitted from person to person. It is a new phenomenon to see many otherwise healthy individuals, who have not experienced trauma to the eye, suffering from this infection.Keratitis translates to inflammation of the cornea.Diagnosis can be challenging, because the early clinical features generally present like other infections caused by viruses, bacteria and even protozoa. However, the recent surge in Fusarium Keratitis has created a heightened awareness and concern among eye doctors. The prompt recognition of an existing fungal infection is critical, as corneal scarring and permanent loss of vision can occur without immediate and appropriate treatment. Treatment consists of eye drops for a period of two to three months and sometimes an oral antifungal medication.Surgery is necessary in some cases.

Signs and Symptoms
The following is a brief list of symptoms which may be present with Fusarium Keratitis:
– Unusual redness in the eye
– Eye pain
– Blurred or hazy vision
– Excessive tearing
– Sensitivity to light
– Ocular pain
– Ocular discharge

There is a theory among some eye specialists that Renu with MoistureLocs properties, namely the combination of a new disinfectant called Alexidine along with newer moisturizing agents, may be contributing to the outbreak of infections. It is important to note, that although Alexidine has been determined to be safe and effective, specific conditions may change this. They are:
– Failure to routinely replace solution in lens case
– Failure to close bottle (of solution)
– Failure to effectively clean case.

Additionally, Daniel Schultz, Director of the FDAs Center For Devices and Radiological Health said, There does appear to be an association between the formulation itself as well as certain use patterns in creating this higher than normal incidence of these particular infections.

On May 12, 2006, the CDC confirmed 122 cases of Fusarium Keratitis in the United States, and the majority of these cases reported using Bausch & Lomb Renu with MoistureLoc. At that time there were another 15 cases under the heading of possible and at least 60 more under investigation!

This troubling scenario, and the tragic damage suffered by its victims, has led many to question the efficiency and effectiveness of Bausch & Lombs response to the evidence as it was presented to them.Dr. Chu of NJ, a specialist in corneal diseases, phoned Bausch & Lomb back in March to alert them to the fact that three of his patients were suffering from a dangerous microbe and that all three were Bausch & Lomb customers. It has been reported that this was the first official U.S. involvement that Bausch & Lomb was aware of. Although Bausch & Lomb responded by confirmingthat there had been cases of Fusarium Keratitis in the Far East, it was Dr. Chu who first contacted the Federal Health Authorities.

There are victims in at least 32 states who are currently affected by the Fusarium Keratitis infection.Subsequently there are a growing number of lawsuits. Zoe Wade, a 69 year old woman in Florida, filed a lawsuit in Palm Beach County. She claims that she started using the Bausch & Lomb Renu with MoistureLoc solution last July. By October her infection was severe and she was in great pain.Just seven months after using the product, her doctor recommended that her left eye be removed in order to stop the infection from spreading to her brain.

Zoe Wades attorney also represents a 46-year old man, another Bausch & Lomb cleaning solution customer, afflicted with the fungal infection. He now has impaired vision and is suing the company.Records reveal that seven other individuals filed suits in April and seek class action status.

Barbara Cavallaro of Cranston, Rhode Island has filed a $5 million class action suit in addition to an individual suit. Her sight is permanently damaged and her eyes are now two different colors. She too, was a Renu with MoistrueLoc customer.

It is strongly urged that clinicians seeing patients with eye infections immediately refer these patients to doctors for definitive diagnoses.Clinical specimens are obtained through corneal cultures, corneal tissue biopsies or confocal microscopy. The infection may present as a gray or white lesion with a feathery border. All cases of Fusarium Keratitis should be reported to local health departments and / or the CDC.

It is extremely frightening to think that a contact lens product can lead to severe eye infection or blindness. Naturally, the rising occurrence of Fusarium Keratitis, and its association with the Bausch & Lomb cleaning solution, has many contact lens users concerned about their own safety. If you are using Bausch & Lomb Renu with MoistureLoc cleaning solution, you should discontinue immediately and throw it away. However, contact lens use is still considered a healthy choice when it is prescribed by your doctor. The American Optometric Association states that contact lenses remain a safe and effective form of vision correction. They do stress, however, that excellent hygiene is the key to safe contact lens use. They recommend the following guidelines to ensure safe and healthy contact lens use:

– Wash your hands with soap and water each time you handle your contact lenses.
– Clean lenses regularly.
– Lenses should be stored in a clean lens case.
– Replace your lens case every three months.
– Use the specific cleaning products recommended by your eye doctor.
– Discard old solution.
– Do not re-use old solution.
– Contact lenses need to be replaced as directed by your physician.
– If you experience symptoms such as redness, pain, tearing, or sensitivity to light, remove lenses immediately and call your doctor.

Insomnia and related sleep problems affect some 35 million people in varying degrees. It was recently estimated that about one-third of all students do not get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause many problems, physical and mental.

Doctors and the public don’t regard insomnia and sleep problems in the same way that they look at other brain problems of ADD-Autistic continuum, or depression. All too many of us simply dismiss this problem, but it is serious to many persons.

Some such people already use some form of “noise generator” to help them solve such sleep problems, with varying success. Audio sounds such as rain on the roof, a babbling brook, surf or sailboat sounds, and even “white noise” (sounds like continuous TV static) have been used to mask outside noises. Any such noise generator may help solve insomnia and other sleep problems.

There are several drugs on the market, heavily advertised on TV, that are also used by many people. However as has been reported in the news lately, such drugs cause many other problems, including sleepwalking, confusion, and even physical deterioration!

Listen carefully to such ads on TV, and, in particular, listen to the careful phrasing of the “warnings” required by the Food and Drug Administration. Notice the “weasel wording” that attempts to pass over these serious side effects as not so serious! They make such serious health problems seem “not so bad”, but that’s advertising and “spin”. Such drugs can be (and often are) very dangerous, no matter how they try to gloss over these facts.

If you really listen (or read) these disclaimers, think about them. Those words a few, or some users that cause most persons to think that’s not me actually mean that it might be you. Do you really want to take a chance on the problems so lightly dismissed in these ads? Take a good look at such advertising and spins.

EEG Biofeedback (neurofeedback) “training” has been used by psychologists for many years now. It is very effective, and successful in over 85% of all insomnia cases. However, the cost of such training at $3000-$10,000 means that only the rich can afford such treatment. (Doctor “time” is always expensive.) In 2000 I started a company that leased EEG BF equipment, cutting the overall cost to about 1/5th of the average. But, even that left mid and low income families with drugs as their only available option!

In 2004, I suddenly realized that this “brain training” done by EEG BF could also be done by the use of subliminal messaging. I devised an audio recording to do this, and got over 20 volunteers that trusted me enough to pay a fee to enter this test.

The results were mixed. Although depression and insomnia problems were solved, some failures were found in the ADD/ADHD test population. In the original audio, I only tried to raise one brain wave by repetition. EEG BF, in the usual format, raises this same one, and also lowers or controls another.

Another theory I had advanced in 2000 was that raising this particular brain wave (SMR 12-14Hz) somehow changed the brain’s allergy/sensitivity response. Several persons in the test reported that symptoms other than the mental problems diagnosed also cleared up. This shows that my theory was along the correct lines. As an Orthomolecular Psychologist, I was well aware that all such “brain problems” can be (and usually are) caused by allergy/sensitivity reactions.

In 2005, I devised a new test that did both – raised the SMR brain wave, and lowered the Theta brain wave. My partner and I got over a medium number of volunteers (charging up to $100 each for this privilege to ensure that they sent reports weekly for 8 weeks). This test was a tremendous success. Of every person who completed a minimum of 4 weeks successfully, all experienced dramatic improvement. Most of these volunteers were ADHD kids, with 2 Autistic kids, and few depressives. (The depressives and insomniacs all solved their problems within 4 weeks).

This test ended in March 2006. An interesting note here – not one of the volunteers in this test asked for their money back! Our stipulation was “money back” if they completed the 8 weeks testing. That fact speaks very loud of success.

This Auditory Training system is an even more effective solution! It combines the “noise generator” as an audio overlay, combined with a subliminal message underneath which is heard by the unconscious mind. The soothing noise generator overlay masks outside noises, while the subliminal training actually does “brain training” in much the same way as EEG biofeedback. This combination has already solved every insomnia and other sleep problem out of dozens of users.

Results speak louder than advertising. In dozens of persons with insomnia and other sleep problems of all kinds, all volunteers who used Auditory Training more than a week or so, solved their sleep problem(s).

Of course, Insomnia is also one of the symptoms of depression. This new Auditory Training system has also solved, or at least partially solved every one of such cases as well. One woman lost both her insomnia and her depression, and was able to stay mentally stable when later diagnosed with cancer.

The advantages of this system over EEG BF are multiple:

1. It doesn’t require expensive equipment – a simple CD player is all that is required.

2. It costs a small fraction of the cost of EEG BF, and much less than the expensive drugs.

3. No negative side effects whatsoever. Positive side effects are that it solves some allergy problems

4. You simply turn on the CD player, and go to sleep.

Let’s replace the dangerous drugs with a simpler, cost effective method of solving these problems!

Recently, the results of the Scottish Crime and Victimisation Survey (SCVS) 2006 were released, along with the Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS) 2006, giving an insight into the prevalence of drug abuse in Scotland in all age groups. Of course, these statistics are very similar to the rest of the UK and give us valuable statistical information on the current level of drug use.

The statistics below are certainly significant for parents who may not realise how many children use illegal drugs and equally for employers who may not have considered how many of their employees may be under the influence of substances whilst in the workplace.

The SCVS survey took the views and experiences of just under five thousand adult respondents representing a cross section of society, whilst the SALSUS survey covered over 23,000 children. The results of these studies are summarised as follows:

Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS) 2006:

Many parents are currently unaware of the prevalence of substance misuse amongst children. Prevention is obviously the key here, but often parents put off discussing drug issues with their children, assuming that they wont be exposed to them until they are older. As the statistics below demonstrate, drug use can occur very early on in todays culture. So dont make the mistake of putting off your drug and alcohol awareness talk with your children.

9% of 13 year olds and 27% of 15 year olds reported that they had used an illicit drug at some point in their lives.

7% of 13 year olds and 23% of 15 year olds reported that they had used an illicit drug in the year prior to the survey.

4% of 13 year olds and 14% of 15 year olds reported that they had used an illicit drug in the month prior to the survey which is indicative of more frequent recreational drug use.

There was little difference between boys and girls in the percentage who reported that they had used illicit drugs in the last month (13 year olds, boys 4%, girls 3%: 15 year olds, boys 14%, girls 12%).

4% of 15 year olds reported using illicit drugs at least once a week (including those reporting use on most days). An additional 4% of 15 year olds reported that they usually used illicit drugs once or twice a month and 4% a few times a year.

Links between smoking, alcohol and drug use?

33% of 13 year olds and 50% of 15 year olds who were regular smokers had also used drugs in the last month. The prevalence was lower than this among weekly drinkers; 19% of 13 year olds and 34% of 15 year olds who were weekly drinkers had also used drugs in the last month, but still higher than the overall prevalence for all pupils (4% of 13 year olds and 13% of 15 year olds).

So what about the availability of drugs?

As with other UK data concerning the availability of drugs, this survey also showed how many children have actually been offered illegal drugs.

In 2006, just under one quarter (23%) of 13 year olds and over half (53%) of 15 year olds reported that they had ever been offered illicit drugs. There was little difference between boys and girls in their experience of being offered illicit drugs. At age 13, 25% of boys and 21% of girls reported having been offered illicit drugs, whilst at age 15 years old 55% of boys and 51% of girls had been offered illicit drugs.

It seems that there is a definite cultural shift toward substance abuse in the younger generations and this is very difficult to reverse as the young people themselves become parents with a more liberal and relaxed attitude towards drugs. Having a greater awareness of drugs, their effects and the associated hazards is vital for parents if they are to educate their children.

Many parents are also unaware of home drug testing kits which are available via mail order. When used in conjunction with open communication, drug information and co-operation, these kits can be used to help deter children from abusing drugs and to create an opposing force against peer pressure. Being able to say, Sorry, I cant use drugs because my parents test me at home can make all the difference.

Scottish Crime and Victimisation Survey (SCVS) 2006:

This survey covered adult drug use trends which of course affect the workplace, road safety and many other areas of modern living. Employers in particular should be aware of the following statistics and how they can affect the safety of all employees.

Over one third (37%) of all respondents reported having taken illicit drugs at least once during their lifetime, while 13% reported using illegal drugs in the last year.

There was a trend for more male respondents to report having used drugs (43%) than female respondents (31%) at any point in their lifetime.

Over 55% of those respondents aged 20 to 34 years old, 46% of those aged 16 to 19 years old and 39% of 35 to 39 year olds and a fifth of 40 to 59 year olds had used drugs at some stage in their lives, showing that the younger age ranges are far more likely to use illegal drugs.

With regard to more recent drug use, a third of male respondents in each age group under 29 years old had used drugs in the last year. This fell to 21% of 30 to 34 year olds, 17% of 35 to 39 year olds and 4% of 40 to 59 year olds. The number of female respondents reporting drug use in the last year also declined with age (36% of 16 to 19 year olds, 24% of 20 to 24 year olds, 12% of 25 to 29 year olds and 5% of 30 to 34 year olds).

With regard to which drugs were used most commonly, it was determined that Cannabis (or Marijuana) was the drug most frequently used in the year prior to the survey and used ever (11% and 33% respectively). Cocaine was reported to have been used in the last year by 4% of those questioned and used ever by 9%. Ecstasy was used in the last year by 3% and used ever by 10% of respondents. Amphetamines and poppers had each been used in the last year by 2% of respondents and used ever by 14% and 10% of respondents respectively.

The highest level of Cannabis use ever was reported amongst 20 to 24 year age olds (54%) and 25 to 29 year olds (53%). The same was observed for cocaine (17% of 20 to 24 year olds and 18% of 25 to 29 year olds). Ecstasy use ever was reported most often among 25 to 29 year olds (25%) and 30 to 34 year olds (22%)

Other useful statistics were also taken into consideration such as which drugs people had been offered. Cannabis (Marijuana) was the drug reported as having been most frequently offered in the last year. 20% of males and 12% of females reported having been offered Cannabis in the last year

In conclusion, whether you are a parent concerned about your children or an employer looking to reduce the impact of substance abuse in the workplace, you need to arm yourselves with more information and develop a structured plan of action. Drug information, on-site drug and alcohol test kits, awareness training, etc, are all available so formulate a strategy today!

Bipolar disorder is a treatable brain disorder marked by extreme shifts in a person’s mood and disposition. Periods of intense mania are followed by bouts of severe depression, often with periods of normalcy in between. While on either end of the spectrum, sufferers of bipolar disorder often find it difficult to concentrate and maintain functionality sufficient for leading a productive life. Those who experience severe episodes of depression and hypomania are classified as suffering from bipolar II disorder, which women are diagnosed with more often than men. It is estimated that over two million Americans have a form of bipolar disorder, although many may be unaware of it. Bipolar disorder can develop at any time, however, most will experience the onset of symptoms in the post adolescence/early adulthood phase of their life. Fortunately, bipolar disorder can be treated but must be managed for long term success. Recognizing the symptoms of bipolar disorder is often the first step toward proper diagnosis and treatment.

The manic phases of bipolar disorder can be marked by an increase in energy, restlessness, irritability, the inability to concentrate, aggressiveness, euphoria, irrational thought and limited sleep, among other symptoms. The depression phase of bipolar disorder can be marked by feelings of sadness, guilt, helplessness, pessimism and agitation, as well as weight fluctuation, disturbed sleep patterns and a loss of interest in life. Suicidal thoughts may be present during prolonged periods of depression as well.

The importance of recognizing the symptoms of bipolar disorder cannot be overstated as many who suffer from it are improperly diagnosed because of the nature of their condition. Sufferers may feel that the extreme shifts in mood they are experiencing are simply the ebb and flow of life. They may seek help during periods of depression and not disclose their manic behavior because they associate it with happiness or normalcy. Recent attention paid to bipolar disorder and bipolar II disorder in the media, however, has helped to educate the population. Just as both forms of bipolar disorder have become more widely recognized by the medical community, the general public is also more aware than ever of their existence. Guidance is available for those who exhibit some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder as there are now many excellent resources for detailed information, both in print and on the web. Anyone who feels they may be suffering from bipolar disorder should always consult their physician. With proper treatment, those who have experienced the debilitating nature of this affliction can go on to lead healthy, productive lives.

Pollen is in the air and a fierce allergy season is underway, affecting an estimated 36 million Americans with seasonal allergies. Many sufferers with stuffy noses or watery eyes will visit their pharmacies for relief, but this year they may not find their familiar medications on store shelves.

Many states have restricted access to some popular over-the-counter treatments for nasal congestion because they contain pseudoephedrine, a common ingredient in decongestant medications that has been used to make illegal drugs.

As a decongestant, pseudoephedrine is safe and effective when used as directed, but the state laws mean allergy sufferers may have to ask for these treatments at the pharmacy counter, sign an official registry to monitor their purchases, or show photo identification before purchasing. And some states also have imposed limits on how much medicine a customer can buy.

In addition to state laws, the president recently signed federal restrictions on these decongestants, which will eventually lead to national regulations for pseudoephedrine at the pharmacy.

What’s an

Allergy Sufferer to Do?

These provisions make seeing a doctor even more important this season. A physician can properly diagnose allergies and prescribe the appropriate medications to treat symptoms. Combination antihistamine and decongestant treatments, such as CLARINEX-D 12 Hour (desloratadine 2.5 mg/pseudoephedrine sulfate, USP 120 mg) Extended Release Tablets, are available by prescription to help control both the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, also called “hay fever.” These treatments are not affected by the new restrictions and can be obtained at the pharmacy like any other prescription medication.

“It can be difficult for patients to find the right medication at the pharmacy, with an overwhelming number of different options on the shelves,” said Dr. Sandra Gawchik, co-director of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa. “That’s why it’s important to work with a doctor, who can develop a treatment regimen tailored for the needs of each patient.”

Seasonal allergy symptoms, which are caused by pollen from trees and grass, may include any blend of nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, scratchy throat, a runny nose and sneezing.

“My patients often say their symptoms are the most severe in the morning, and that nasal congestion is their most bothersome one,” said Dr. Gawchik. “For these patients, I typically suggest an antihistamine and decongestant combination treatment, which will help alleviate their nasal congestion and also relieve their other symptoms.”

Tips to Manage

Allergy Symptoms

Dr. Gawchik recommends the following to help allergy sufferers reduce their exposure to pollen:

• Keep your windows closed while driving or at home.

• Change clothes or take a shower to remove pollen after returning from outside.

• Limit outdoor activities from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., when pollen counts are typically higher.

• Visit www.allergyrelief.com each day to check your local allergy forecast.

“It’s impossible to completely avoid symptom-causing pollen, but you don’t have to suffer,” said Dr. Gawchik. “By working with your doctor and taking your medication throughout the season, you can wake up each morning with your allergy symptoms under control.”

Twice daily CLARINEX-D 12 HOUR (desloratadine 2.5 mg and pseudoephedrine sulfate, USP 120 mg) Extended Release Tablets treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, including nasal congestion, in patients 12 years and older. Due to its pseudoephedrine component, CLARINEX-D 12 HOUR Extended Release Tablets should not be taken by patients with narrow-angle glaucoma (abnormally high eye pressure), difficulty urinating, severe high blood pressure, or severe heart disease, or by patients who have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the past fourteen (14) days. Patients with high blood pressure; diabetes; heart disease; increased intraocular pressure (eye pressure); thyroid, liver or kidney problems; or enlarged prostate should check with their healthcare provider before taking CLARINEX-D 12 HOUR Extended Release Tablets. Care should be used if CLARINEX-D 12 HOUR is taken with other antihistamines or decongestants because combined effects on the cardiovascular system may be harmful. The most commonly reported adverse events for CLARINEX-D 12 HOUR Extended Release Tablets were, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness, sore throat, and dizziness.

Important Points To Consider When It Comes To Drug Testing

For people who want to have a loved one undergo drug testing or for anyone who just wants to go through a drug testing, here are some highly important points to take note of when it comes to drug testing and substance abuse. It really is high time for people all across the United States, even the entire world, to really put some greater importance on the life threatening risks that are involved when it comes to drugs and various other substance abuses.

Some general information about the detection of drug abuse from drug testing: as compared to having a drug testing wherein they will take samples of the patients blood, it is highly recommended that the medical technicians just use the patients urine as the urine has been proven to be actually more reliable when it comes to the detection of any drug abuse. Unfortunately, it also a more expensive kind of drug testing. However, even if it is fairly easy for medical technicians to see whether or not a person has taken in some harmful drugs into ones system.

A urine drug testing, as goes with the blood drug testing, would not be able to provide the medical technicians with other relevant information with regards to the drug testing. Whether or not the patient is under the influence of the drug at a specific time is most unlikely to be determined by the urine drug testing.

Blood testing, however, in spite of being the lesser choice when it comes to drug testing will actually be able to help the medical technicians to obtain some more relevant information on whether or not the individual is actually under the influence of drugs during the time that he or she went through the drug testing. Although some experts say that this may tend to not be conclusive in all cases.

Another drug testing technique nowadays is through hair testing which is actually not recommended because a lot of laboratories are actually finding some difficulty with regards to the reliability of the results especially, as most often than not, drug testing through the hair usually poses positive results for the patient. A lot of people dont buy into this kind of drug testing since with the simple act of washing ones hair as well as being subjected to other hair contaminants can the patient actually saves his or herself from being detected with any substance abuse.

The laboratories that usually perform this kind of drug testing do not really have the ability to confirm the reliability as well as the accuracy of their hair testings results. This can actually put lawyers who are defending a person who is said to have been under substance abuse in a precarious situation wherein the evidence to be presented in court may really not be that reliable. The urine drug testings accuracy is also highly dependent on how the drug testing procedure has been carried out by the medical technician.

It is important to note that drug testing will only be extremely reliable and accurate if and only if every aspect of the drug testing process are done with much care. When mishandling happens, there is the great chance that the results of the drug testing may actually be inaccurate and unreliable. This is why when it comes to drug testing, the people who are going through with it should be fully aware of how the drug testing process should be appropriately done as well as exercise ones assertiveness by demanding that the clinic which is conducting the drug testing has to do it properly and according to the systems standards.

Unfortunately, most especially during this time wherein more and more people are getting lured into doing drugs as well as other substance abuse, a lot of the clinics that are conducting drug testing all over the United States are not really capable of providing the reliable results that people need due to the rampant mishandling and as well as the improper way that some clinics conduct their drug testings. Therefore, the top three most reliable aspects that people should need to look for in a drug test for it be considered as reliable: strict collection procedures, proper testing procedures and random notification.

Recognizing Changing Symptoms In Parkinson’s Disease May Help Patients To Better Manage Their Condition

Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects about 1 million people in the United States and 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. As researchers learn more about the disease, improved treatment options are possible.

That’s good news for people like Paul Ramirez, a World War II veteran and avid dancer. He was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1999, after his wife saw him shuffling his feet during their daily neighborhood walks. Like many people with PD, Ramirez was treated with a traditional levodopa medication to manage his symptoms.

Levodopa is the most widely used symptomatic PD treatment and has remained the “gold standard” of care for nearly 40 years. The majority of people with PD eventually need levodopa treatment to control their symptoms, even if they begin their therapy with other medications. After several years of treatment with levodopa, however, people with PD may see changes in the way their medication controls their symptoms. Symptoms may return before it is time for the next dose of medication.

For Ramirez, the change in duration of his symptom control became increasingly noticeable after the first two to three years of levodopa treatment. Not only did he find that the onset of daily symptoms was becoming less predictable, he also found that his “off” time was increasing, meaning his motor symptoms, like freezing and slowness of movement, lasted for longer periods of time during each day.

Since Ramirez’s PD symptoms were not controlled as long as they could be, he needed to use a walker in order to maintain his balance, which severely limited his ability to participate in the activities that he enjoyed.

“I love to dance, but within a few years of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, I found that I not only couldn’t dance, but many times I was even too weak to walk. It was very frustrating,” says Ramirez.

The change in symptom control that he experienced is called “wearing off.” Symptoms associated with levodopa therapy “wearing off” can include both motor and nonmotor symptoms. Motor symptoms may include trembling or shaking and nonmotor symptoms may include anxiety or feeling restless. When levodopa medication “wears off,” it can make even basic daily activities, such as walking and dressing, difficult for the person with Parkinson’s disease.

Ramirez’s doctor, Kevin Callerame, M.D., staff Adult Neurologist at the NeuroMedical Center in Baton Rouge, La., says, “The good news is that the motor symptoms of ‘wearing off’ can be treated with newer levodopa medications that can help increase the time levodopa controls the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.”

When Dr. Callerame saw him in the summer of 2004, the physician noticed that he would have frequent freezing episodes.

Dr. Callerame began treating Ramirez with a Parkinson’s disease medication called Stalevo (carbidopa, levodopa and entacapone). Stalevo is an enhanced levodopa medication that combines levodopa with two other components to reduce its side effects and extend its benefits. Stalevo tablets are indicated for certain PD patients who have levodopa-related “wearing off” motor complications.

In the year since Ramirez’s medication has changed, Dr. Callerame says, “Ramirez’s symptoms have been controlled for four to five hours, versus one to two hours, following each dose of Stalevo.” For Ramirez, longer symptom control has enabled him to walk more easily, and that has given him the confidence to try other activities that he once enjoyed.

Dr. Callerame urges people with Parkinson’s disease to communicate openly with their doctors because different treatment options may be available. However, in order to treat “wearing off,” it must first be identified.

A new, free-of-charge information and resource kit is available for people with Parkinson’s disease that can help to identify the signs and symptoms of “wearing off.” The kit contains a diary card to track when symptoms come back between doses of medication.

To order a free StEP Kit, call 1-866-STEP-KIT (1-866-783-7548) toll-free or visit www.stepkit.net.

Ramirez’s story represents the successful treatment with Stalevo (carbidopa, levodopa and entacapone) of an actual patient with Parkinson’s disease and experiencing “wearing off.” Because every patient responds differently, results may vary. In a clinical trial, Stalevo provided, on average, 1.4 more hours a day of symptom relief than standard levodopa.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of “wearing off” can help you manage your Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

Important Information for Patients Regarding Stalevo: Stalevo (carbidopa, levodopa and entacapone) tablets are indicated for patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Stalevo is a medicine that can be used instead of carbidopa/levodopa and Comtan (entacapone) by patients taking those medicines as separate tablets. Depending on levodopa dose and side effects, Stalevo can also be used to replace carbidopa/levodopa when the benefits of levodopa are wearing off. Please ask your health care professional if Stalevo is appropriate for you. Stalevo is supplied as tablets in three strengths: Stalevo 50, containing 12.5 mg carbidopa, 50 mg levodopa and 200 mg entacapone; Stalevo 100, containing 25 mg carbidopa, 100 mg levodopa and 200 mg entacapone; and Stalevo 150, containing 37.5 mg carbidopa, 150 mg levodopa and 200 mg entacapone. The most common side effects of Stalevo are unwanted or uncontrollable movements (known as dyskinesia); nausea; diarrhea; excessive muscle movements (known as hyperkinesia); harmless discoloration of urine, sweat and/or saliva; diminished or slow movements (known as hypokinesia); abdominal pain; dizziness; constipation; fatigue; pain; and hallucinations. Some of the more serious side effects may include severe diarrhea, severe dyskinesia, hallucinations, other mental disturbances, orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure), rhabdomyolysis (a muscle disease), and symptoms resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a condition characterized by fever and muscle stiffness). Tell your health care professional if you have bothersome side effects. He or she can make adjustments that may reduce these effects. You should not quickly lower your Stalevo dose or suddenly stop it altogether. Drugs broken down by the COMT enzyme (e.g., isoproterenol, epinephrine) should be used with caution when taking Stalevo. If you take a nonselective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, you should not take Stalevo. Stalevo should not be taken with selegiline at doses higher than 10 mg/day. Because Stalevo contains entacapone, it should not be taken together with Comtan. Be careful using Stalevo if you have severe heart or lung disease; asthma; renal, hepatic or endocrine disease; or a history of heart attacks or ulcers. Do not take Stalevo if you have glaucoma, melanoma or other related medical disorders. Before you take Stalevo, talk to your doctor about any health problems you might have.

Depression is one of the most common psychological and emotional problems American adults encounter. A study reports that about 13 to 20 percent of American adults have some form of depressive symptoms. Unfortunately, many severe cases of depression can ultimately lead to suicide.

Are there any solutions and treatments available to stem this unfortunate tide? Fortunately, the answer to this is yes. Unfortunately again, many of these treatments involves a soup of medicines that may have some form or side effect. As we discussed previously psychotherapy is another solution that is gaining popularity due to the favorable results they have exhibited.

For some people, the question that remains is if there are any natural depression treatments available that do not involve some cocktail of hard-to-spell medications that can be taken as a preventive and beneficial alternative to mainstream treatments. The answer is yes. Although it is recommended that any form of depression should be consulted with a doctor lets take a look at a list of natural supplements that may help alleviate symptoms of depression.

It Starts with the Diet Depression can be treated with better nutrition. Studies have shown that such treatment not only has a beneficial effect on the persons physical health, but also a favorable effect on the persons mental and emotional health. This nutritional treatment includes modification of diet, vitamins and minerals, and the addition of some amino acid supplements.

The amino acid supplements are essential elements that are precursors to neurotransmitters. The amino acids D, L-pheylalanine and L-tyrosine are a viable alternative to antidepressant drugs.

A deficiency in vitamins and minerals in the body can also cause depression. If this condition is corrected, depression owing to this cause can be alleviated. Even if you are not sure if you lack vitamins and minerals, supplementing your diet with them will often improve symptoms related to depression and will contribute to better overall health.

Some Very Useful Herbs The herb St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) in an extracted standardized form is being used in Germany and other European countries to treat depression in its mild and moderate forms. It is also known to alleviate anxiety and sleep disorders.

This herb claims many benefits among them are its anti-depressive and antiviral properties.

The Ginkgo (Ginkgo Biloba) extract, while not a primary treatment for major cases of depression, is an excellent supplement to any depression-related syndrome. Studies are beginning to show that Ginkgo can be used to treat some forms of depression that are not responsive to antidepressant agents. In cases of resistant depression, Ginkgo Biloba is beginning to appear attractive to the medical world.

Cut Back on Those Soft Drinks Many practitioners advocate a nutrition oriented approach to treating depression. They believe that the answer to the depression question can be found in the diet of a person. Studies show that a decrease in the intake of sugars and refined carbohydrates can produce relief from symptoms of depression.

This diet will entail cutting out sugary drinks, pasta, white bread, and other processed foods. For your carbohydrate needs, it would be better to stick to grains, whole wheat, and other natural plant based carbohydrates. Also, cutting down on these kinds of food can do wonders for ones overall health.

This treatment is recommended for those who feel depressed and languid during the late hours of the morning and the afternoon. For these people, eating sugary foods will induce a temporary feeling of alleviation from depression. However, this is only for a few minutes, and the body automatically reverts to languid depression.

Depression is one serious disorder that should not be taken for granted. Some people will equate depression with other natural feelings such as anger, happiness, and sadness. However, depression is much more complicated than that. It is a disorder and an ailment that can be treated by natural or medical means. It would do well to consult your doctor for more information on dealing with depression.
